Description

This is, how close i can get with my equipment. I'm fascinated by this dense, dynamic and bright area of the Great Orion Nebula.

This nebula was discovered in the 1730es by the french geophysicist Jean-Jacques de Mairan, and catalogued by Charles Messier in the late 1760es as number 43, while the Great Orion Nebula got the 42 (of course long before Douglas Adams was born). Messier 43 is a star forming and HII region, which is separated by the "main nebula" by a dense barrier of dust.  The glowing sphere of hydrogen measures approx 2 LJ in diameter, and is illuminated by variable star HD 37061 in 1300 LJ distance.  It is located behind this dramatic scenery of dense dust, known as the M43 dark lane.
