Description

I have been wanting to image this object for 2 reasons. First, it is likely the largest spiral galaxy in our local universe. Second, my Astrobin friend Gotthard imaged it for over 50 hours to create this fantastic image which inspired me to give it a try. Now there are 2 images of this object on Astrobin!

This object is a giant spiral galaxy located 230 million light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +36 degrees. It spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a massive diameter of 280,000 light years. We are viewing this galaxy about 20 degrees from edge-on. Note the tiny faint bar which appears horizontal in my image orientation.

This amazing galaxy has the nicknames of the Godzilla Galaxy and Rubin’s Galaxy. In deference to the late Dr. Vera Rubin, a pioneer in the study of galaxy rotation and dark matter, I am not going to do my usual rant on nicknames this time.
