Description

From Bortle 1 skies in Kodachrome State Park in south central Utah.
IC 434 is a reflection nebula located in the constellation Orion. Here are some interesting facts about IC 434:
  • A 1,500 light years away from Earth.Illuminated by the bright star Alnitak, which is one of the three stars that make up Orion's Belt.
  • The shape of IC 434 resembles that of a horse's head, which is why it is also known as the Horsehead Nebula.
  • Approximately 3 light years across, making it one of the smallest known nebulae.
  • The dark cloud of dust and gas in IC 434 is composed mainly of hydrogen and helium gas, as well as dust particles made up of carbon and other elements.
  • Part of a larger complex of gas and dust clouds known as the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex.
  • Discovered by the Scottish astronomer Williamina Fleming in 1888.
  • Contains several other smaller nebulae, including IC 435 and IC 432.
