Description

This Astrobin Debut Object captures a pair of galaxies located 700 million light years away in the the constellation of Pisces at a declination of +12 degrees.  It consists of 2 magnitude 15 galaxies – an orange elliptical (or lenticular) galaxy and a wonderfully complex blue spiral galaxy.  In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Elliptical and Elliptical-like Galaxies Close to and Perturbing Spirals.

The elliptical galaxy, LEDA 4748, is located 700 million light years away  It spans 45 arc-seconds in our apparent view and is 150,000 light years in diameter.  It does not appear disturbed to me.

The spiral galaxy, UGC 849, is about the same distance away.  It is bigger in size, clocking in at about 200,000 light years.  The color and structure of the disk is fantastic.  I like the disturbed, fan-shape of the disk, as well as the faint central ring around the core.  I am especially intrigued by the “beam of light” which seems to stream out of the core to the right towards the elliptical.

Dr. Arp's assumption was that the disturbance in UGC 849 is being caused by the elliptical.  But there is another possibility, especially since the elliptical does not show signs of disturbance.  The small blue disturbed spiral galaxy (LEDA 73921) on the left edge of the image is also 700 million light years away.  This object has 2 bright core-like areas, so this object could itself be 2 interacting galaxies.  It also could be the reason for the wonderful disturbance in UGC 849.

The attached Revision G image is a wider view that captures 3 Arp objects (Arp 48, Arp 88 & Arp 119) in a framing within a field radius of 0.23 degrees, representing the tightest framing of 3 Arp objects in the entire Arp catalog.
