Description

This object is an emission nebula located in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +42 degrees. It is part of the large Gamma Cygni (IC 1318) nebula complex.

IC 1318 has five different designated segments, named from a through e. The parts of the nebula which are normally imaged as the Butterfly Nebula are parts d and e, but that is not what is shown here.

The object shown here lies slightly north and west of the Butterfly Nebula. Its designation has been the source of some confusion. You will sometimes see this object referenced as IC 1318a, but it is actually IC 1318b. It is also designated as LBN 251.

The star cluster at lower right is IC 1311. I like the scattered dark nebulae throughout the frame. My favorite part of the image is IC 1318c, which is the subtly beautiful nebula at the left edge of the image which looks a bit like a blooming rose.
