Description

I have been a visual observer much longer than I have been an imager. One of my favorite star clusters is Messier 46 because of the combination of a beautiful rich star cluster with a planetary nebula superimposed.

There has been a certain amount of debate in the past about whether the cluster and the planetary are in chance alignment or whether they are associated. Current thought is that they are in chance alignment. Radial velocity measures do not match and distance estimates are also disparate. For example SkyTools 3 Pro lists the distance to Messier 46 as 4500 light years with a radial velocity of 41 km/sec. NGC 2438 has a distance estimate of 3700 light years and a radial velocity of 77 km/sec.

At a distance of 4500 light years, Messier 46 would be roughly 25 light years or so in diameter.
