Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as UGC 12891, is a pair of elliptical galaxies located 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +23 degrees.   In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Galaxies with Appearance of Fission.

This magnitude 16 object is comprised of 2 elliptical galaxies, each about 70,000 light years In diameter.  These 2 galaxies appear to be interacting, based on their slightly deformed galactic haloes and more importantly the star cloud to the upper left.  This star cloud appears to connect via stellar bridge to the galaxies.  Dr. Arp called this feature a “jet”, but it does not appear to be a true jet to me.

The cloud is much larger relative to the galaxies than any other feature like this that I have seen near an elliptical.  It could be the remnants of a former galaxy being absorbed into this pair.
