Description

The origin of many features in the lunar maria remains ambiguous . Crater or volcanic cone ? Lava flow or tectonic feature ? Since seas are generally older than 3 billion years , there are small features that are worn and rounded due to meteorite bombardment . So its true mode of origin is not easy to discern.

In the picture attached the south corresponds to the center underneath and there can be seen part of Palus Putredinis , north up we can see the Aristillus and Autolycus craters . Yellow lines demarcate an interesting formation in the shape of a hill with a crater in the center ( see larger image obtained by the probe LROC / NASA in the corner below right) The hill is about 250 m above the surrounding plains and has a slope about 8 ° . The slope is steeper than expected for a low basaltic and more consistent shell to a volcanic cone and crater fact be centered in the dome actually suggests that the resource could be a volcanic cone .

The grouping of hills seen exactly where it passes the lower yellow line was originally mapped as Fra Mauro Formation and using Quick Map ( http://lroc.sese.asu.edu/news/uploads/LROCiotw/M117494941_M117488146ano.pn ) for a more detailed view we see that in this region there are several hills have craters or near its summit are symmetrical in shape, both attributes which suggest a volcanic origin. Elsewhere on the moon , there are fields of volcanic vents that look similar to these . So then we can conclude that this may be a volcanic complex that has not yet been recognized .
