Description

Imaged the same day as ngc 4656, this is ngc 3079. I wanted to find the double quasar which is very near this galaxy but it was too late in the year and the whole area was about to disappear behind a particularly annoying hazel nut tree in my garden. I only managed 12 x 2 minute exposure before it was gone and I never got around to the 'double quasar'.

However this is quite an interesting galaxy. A burst of star formation is creating high speed stellar winds and accellerating particles and gas to many thousands of light years above the plane of the galaxy. Hubble has imaged this galaxy in great detail here : imgsrc.hubblesite.org/hu/db/imag ... -print.jpg

It's about 50 MLy away, mag 11.2 and a nice sight through the eyepiece as well as presenting a colourful ccd image.

I actually found an image of the 'double' quasar that I took many years ago (March 2007) with my old MX5C parallel camera (what a great little camera that was). It shows the double quasar quite nicely, image D.
