Description

Lurking in the outer reaches of UMa lies this interesting group of galaxies, comprising not 1 but 2 Arp galaxies.

ngc 2857 was classified by Halton Arp as a low surface brightness spiral galaxy when he compiled his atlas of peculiar galaxies. It is No. 1 in his atlas. Some relevent info may be useful. ngc 2857 is the rather faint but very pretty spiral at the bottom of my image. It is unquestionably not an easy visual target. At magnitude 14.3 and surface brightness 15.8 it would require a large telescope and very dark skies to 'see' it (can anyone with a big telescope see it visually?). It's also quite small 2.4' x 2.2' and quite remote, distance 220 MLy.

The other 2 bright galaxies in the field make up another Arp galaxy pairing, this time Arp 285 and they are much brighter and about half the distance of ngc 2857. ngc 2854, top of my image, is mag 13.8 and surface brightness 13.7 which makes it rather more accessible, even though it is tiny in size, 1.9' x 0.6'. ngc 2856 is another spiral but slighter brighter, with a surface brightness of 13.0 and a size of 1.1' x 0.5'. There are other galaxies, incredibly distant, to be seen the brightest is the little elliptical PGC 26694 below and to the right of ngc 2857. It measures 0.5' x 0.2', is mag. 15.8 and surface brightness 13.0.

Taken in April on one of those clear but not particularly transparent nights, this is the sum of 51 x 60 sec exposures, using a light pollution filter in an attempt to increase contrast. There is some background noise but I was very pleased to be able to record this faint little gem.
