Description

There are some superb galaxies of all descriptions in and around Ursa Major which are perfectly placed for observation/imaging right now. Besides the obvious well known Messier galaxies there are a myriad of fascinating and relatively unknown galaxies which just cry out to be imaged.

Here, I present an image obtained a few days ago during a rare period of reasonable seeing. I normally use 120 sec subs guided using PHD and acquire a total exposure of between 60 and 120 minutes depending on the seeing, the relative faintness and size of the target and the degree of light pollution around at the time. On this ocassion I increased the sub exposure time to 180 seconds as the night was reasonable and the target quite bright.

The target was NGC 4157, a nearly edge-on spiral. It can be difficult to see the dust lanes in some edge-on galaxies and the spiral arms can be ill-defined but NGC 4157 has very easily seen dust lanes and it is not too difficult to pick out some of the spiral features.

The tiny little sliver just below 4157 is the 17th mag. PGC 213943 edge-on spiral, distance unknown but clearly immense.
