Description

I have something of a fascination with hunting down 'ringed' galaxies. There aren't that many large bright ones to be found, but lurking in Leo Minor lies this interesting example, NGC 2859.

It is classified SB(r), an inner ringed barred lenticular galaxy - quite a rare beast.

It is not large but quite bright, well the galaxy is, but the ring is fairly faint and demanding. My image barely shows it but the night was not great and I had been having problems with condensation forming on my camera window, note the haze around the star.

There is a faintish quasar, mag. 19.2, z=0.23 at the indicated position on my image, which consists of 50 x 2 min guided exposures.

I also include an Aladin map for quasar reference (upload C)
