Description

www.aavso.org/aavso-special-notice-264

gives an account of the discovery of Supernova 12A in ngc 3239 on the 7th January 2012.

Last night I managed to get some clear skies to observe and image the S/N. NGC 3239, also known as Arp 263, is located not far from Regulus and is a 13.5 magnitude Irregular galaxy with some interesting interacting features, noticably the 2 tails of material apparently linking to smaller galaxies.

The surface brightness of NGC 3239 is a not very promising 16.7 mags per square arcmin. My image consists of 30 x 3 minute exposures on a night of exceptional clarity - even so the tails are faint but the supernova is clearly still very bright.
