Description

Ursa Major is a hot spot for galaxy hunters and also rich in ARP interacting galaxies as well. There are a few interesting objects to be seen actually within the 'trapezoid' of the Plough, mainly galaxies. Perhaps one of the most interesting is the Interacting galaxy pair, ngc 3690 and IC-694, otherwise known as Arp 299. The two galaxies are a colliding or merging pair and they are a strong radio and infrared source. There are regions of intense star forming regions and dust clouds with no apparent disk-like structure and it is one on the most intense star burst systems known.

This object, ngc 3690 or Arp 299 is conveniently positioned almost overhead at this time of year. This image taken in May, when we had clear sky but poor seeing and transparency, consists of 90 minutes of total exposure.

And a bonus; there is another Arp galaxy pair visible in this field of view. The small spiral just above and to the left of ngc 3690 is interacting with the small(er) galaxy which can just be seen to the left of 3690. This is Arp 296 and the 2 galaxies are PGC 35345, mag. 15.7 and SDSS J112850.64+583336.7 (phew!) mag. 18.0.

There is (apparently) a very faint bridge of material between the 2 galaxies, which is not readily apparent in my image.

I could find no quasars within 20 arcmin of Arp 299.
