Description

The beautiful face-on spiral galaxy M101 is one of the brighter Arp peculiar galaxies.

About 20MLy distant in the constellation of Ursa Major, Arp was probably mainly interested in M101 due to the straight spiral arms which are evident both E and W of the core.

There are at least 500 HII regions catalogued around Arp 26, 10 of which have ngc names of their own.

This image, captured in May, is the result of around 25 x 3minute exposures through my 10" Newt. reflector. an anotated version showing the 10 x NGC HII regions present around M101:
