Description

Not far from M101 and interacting strongly with M101, lies this peculiar looking dwarf galaxy, ngc 5474. The shape of ngc 5474 has been distorted by the gravitational interaction and you can see how the nucleus has been displaced from centre. There is also evidence of new star formation.

This image was taken on 6th June and is the sum of 120 second and 180 second exposures, giving an integrated exposure of just over 2 hours. This is one of my longer exposures and indicates the relative faintness of the object and the rather poor atmosphere at this time of year along the south coast.

Telescope: 10" Newt

Camera: SX H9C

Mount: Super Polaris + SS2K

Guiding: PHD.
