Description

Comet NEOWISE made it's closet approach to our sun in early July. This was an incredibly rare occurrence since its orbital period is 6,700 years!

Comets are one of the very few naturally green colored objects in space. They are composed of dust and various types of ice (water ice, dry ice, carbon monoxide ice, ammonia ice, and methane ice). When they get close to our sun the radiation melts all this ice and that's what causes their long tails (the ion tail always point away from the sun). The ultraviolet rays from the sun kick the electrons from these chemicals into higher energy states. It's this process that gives off the Hulk green color of the comet's core. The melting frozen carbon monoxide creates an abundance of CO+ ions which is what causes the brilliant glowing blue tail components.

I remember seeing Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997 when I was a kid. It was one of the very first astronomical events the sparked my interested in Astronomy!

I used PI for calibration, registration, CometAlignment, integration, ColorCombination, and stretching. Then imported into LightRoom for color and noise enhancements. I used the spot healing tool to eliminate the star streaks.
