Description

NGC 5394 and NGC 5395, known collectively known as Arp 84 or the Heron Galaxy, are interacting spiral galaxies 160 million light-years from Earth in the direction of Canes Venatici. The larger galaxy, NGC 5395 is 140,000 light-year across, the smaller one, NGC 5394, is 90,000 light-years across. Both are 160 million light-years away in time and space, both having collided in the past and colliding again "now" so to speak. The collision has resulted in significant star formation in both galaxies, and I was happy to be able to image many of the numerous HII regions as well as the bright blue stars in the spiral arms that resulted from these collisions. There is a wonderful image from the Gemini Telescope in Hawaii, which is well worth a look.

The Heron Galaxy is faint for me under light polluted skies, and as well the details push the limits on resolution. This image is a result of a 3X drizzle in DSS and is cropped.

Description: I was not very happy with this version, I was sure I could do better when the horrible weather returned. I went back to square one in post-processing with Startools
- Less emphasis on the blue channel for the luminance, resulting more faint structure, more detail, and less problem with background and color correction
- A much better stretch, more faint detail, less overblown in the highlights
- More careful on deconvolution and sharpening, lots of detail, but not so much excessive contrast and artifacts
- Intangibles, I think and hope I am getting better at understanding my images, and making the most of them.
