NGC 3842 - Quasars Around NGC 3842.

NGC 3842 is a part of the Abell 1367 Galaxy Cluster in Leo. NGC 3842 is the large elliptical galaxy top right of the top image. It has a magnitude of 14.4.

The anotated image shows some of the other main players in th cluster.

The main objective in making this image was to attempt to image 3 quasars which are to be found very close to 3842.

NGC 3842 is not included in Halton Arp's peculiar galaxy catalogue although he showed great interest in the galaxy and specifically in the presence of the 3 nearby quasars.

Arp's theory was that the probability of finding 3 quasars this near to the galaxy is vanishingly small and that the only way to explain their presence is to believe they were energetically expelled from the galaxy centre. He believes they leave with great velocity (high z), lose velocity and z and eventually evolve into low redshift galaxies.

I exposed the ccd for around 60 x 120 second exposures and have managed to image all 3 quasars. QSO1 has a mag. of <19 and a z=0.335, QSO2 has a mag. of <19 and a z=0.946, QSO3 has a mag. of <21 and a z=2.2. They all seem to be eqi-distant from the elliptical. The close up image shows the relationship of the quasars to the large elliptical.
