Description

When I started learning astrophotography last August, M42 was naturally my first object. I soon realized it is not an easy target to capture or process. I made many attempts and here is the result of five sessions, over five months in two locations. I also tried to process this image many times and eventually come to this one. I wish I could show more of the rich background and the subtle filament on the fringe of the nebulae, but with the extreme light pollution in my backyard, that's probably what I could do for now. The image was shot with 57x180s, 26x120s, 17x30s. I processed the stacked image with a separately processed stack of the 30s subs to create an HDR image in Photoshop so the core of the nebula does not get overexposed. Each of the five groups of subs was calibrated with 30 darks, 25 flats, 25 darkflats, and 50 biases.
