Description

M106 (aka NGC 4258) is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. Its apparent magnitude is 9.1 and apparent dimensions is 18'.6 X 7'.2 as listed in the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database. It is thought to be at a distance of 22 to 25 million light years from Earth. It is also a Seyfert II galaxy, which means that due to x-rays and unusual emission lines detected, it is suspected that part of the galaxy is falling into a supermassive black hole in the center.

In addition to its small companion galaxy, NGC 4248, there are many background galaxies scattered across the frame.
