Description

Here's an edge-on galaxy in Draco, ngc 5987, which exhibits some very prominent

dust lanes. At mag. 12.7 it was just visible through my 10" Newt, but no detail

was resolved. Not surprising because it's surface brightness is quite low at

14.4 mag per squ. arcmin. If it was face-on I don't think it would be a very

easy ccd target at all. It's quite small, 4' x 1.5', is classified Sb and is a

distant 138 Mly. The dust lanes are by far it's most interesting features.

Captured during a rare few hours of cloud free sky at the end of July, this is

the result of 30 x 2 minute exposures, sigma combined.
