Description

I'm not really one for showing animals, or showing off, but I've awarded myself a 'best in class' rosette for my image, taken through a 40 year old Pentax SLR zoom lens at 200mm f4.  Compared to a modern short FL APO refractor it wouldn't qualify, but for an old lens I'm quite satisfied.

This image comprises 95m data (300s subs) through my Optolong L-eNhance filter, which has really brought out the nebulosity, distinguishing the green-blue OIII core from the wider H emissions. I’ve never been able to achieve this sort of FOV with my SCT, and enjoying these wider fields.

I will sort out flat fields, and have a little more data to add to this (although at a slightly different scale), along with some RGB data, and will post a revision once I’ve played some more.

The rosette is a fine object that comes into its own with narrow band filters, lying 5000 LY away in Monoceros, this large nebula is ~130 LY in diameter and surrounds the bright star cluster NGC 2244, which has condensed from the surrounding nebulosity and now energises it with powerful UV irradiation. Apparently (according to Wikipedia) Oklahoma state has laid claim to this rose, which is bold - I’m not sure what the Lancastrians think to that 🤔

Title: Processed in Startools 1.8 alpha

Description: I processed the L-eNhance data and RGB data separately then combined in 'layers' module to try and retain the nebulosity, whilst restoring some colour to the starfield. I'd be really interested in your feedback on this and my other versions.

Title: Up a class?

Description: I have combined the original data with additional 200 m (600s subs) using Baader Ha 7nm filter under a bright moon, and applied flats and darks,. There was quite a lot of noise to deal with from my original image and the longer exposures. Aligned, scaled and stacked in Nebulosity 4, processed in Startools 1.8, with a final star tightening and further noise reduction (GREYCstoration) in Nebulosity 4. The final image is heavily cropped due to rotation of the optical train between imaging sessions. The total integration time is just over 5 hours.

Title: Bicolour image

Description: This version comprises 600s exposures in Ha 7nm (200 m) mapped to L and R, 300s exposures via triband L-eNhance filter (90 m) mapped to G and B. The image is saturated with Ha, and the OIII (L-eNhance) doesn't really show up, although there is some differentiation in this. I think this is now the end of this particular project.
