Description

M 81 is a Spiral Galaxy also known as ( NGC 3031 or Bode's Galaxy ) which is located in the constellation Ursa Major. It is the largest galaxy in the M 81 group of 34 galaxies located in Ursa Major. It was first discovered by Johann Elert Bode in 1774 and in 1779 Pierre Mechain and Charles Messier reidentified Bode's object, which was added to the Messier Catalog in February 1781.

M 82 is a Irregular Galaxy also known as ( NGC 3034 or Cigar Galaxy ) which is also located in the constellation Ursa Major. It is seen as an edge-on galaxy and one of the M 81 group of galaxies. It was listed in Messier catalog with M 81 in February 1781.

M 81 and M 82 are listed as being about 11. 4 million light years from earth.
