Description

Arp 288 is a triple galaxy system in the constellation of Virgo about 320 MLy away. Halton Arp put it in the class 'Double Galaxies with Wind Effects'. NGC 5221, to the N shows some faint plumes. South of 5221 is the double galaxy ngc 5222. The Atlas note says "streamers in both directions from edge of spiral".

So what has caused the streamers in both directions away from 5221? There appears to be no interaction between 5221 and 5222, despite the fact that their redshift is the same or similar.

The rather lovely face-on spiral at the bottom of my image is ngc 5320 and is again around 320 MLy distant. Although it appears not to be distorted by a previous encounter with 5221, maybe this galaxy could explain 5221's extensive 'plumes'

My image consists of only 50 minutes exposure so there may be a case to re-visit this again soon.
