Description

This is just the beginnings of an ongoing multi-year project where I am creating a very large mosaic of the summer Milkyway. The mosaic is being constructed of images taken with my DSLR and 200mm lens. Each panel is 10 x 4mins (40mins). Currently I am stitching the mosaic with CS3 but will likely switch to Registar when I am closer to being finished.

This image is currently only 14 panels but will total to ~170-200 when finished.

The final image should print to about 18-20 feet long by 6-8 feet tall. I did not take much care in processing this photo and many defects are present. There are several stitching artifacts present throughout too. I will update this periodically.

UPDATE - 07/04/2014

I was able to collect more data for this large mosaic project last weekend. This was likely the only data I will collect this summer as the monsoons have finally arrived here in southern Arizona. I also started experimenting with Registar (using the free trial) to register and construct the mosaic. This image was created using Registar in trial mode & as such I had to be a bit creative in how I acquired the registered panels. Since one cannot save images when using the trial version I was using screen shots (very reduced image size and severely reduced quality!) to see what the image looks like so far. Registar is AMAZING!!!!!!! It performs magic when working. I will be purchasing the full license soon for sure. I would never attempt to create an astro mosaic without Registar.

Again, I did not take much care to ensure perfect color matching between panels. Nor did I take much time to process the constructed mosaic. Given the source of the panels and the quality and bit-depth I didn't want to waste my time processing low quality images.

At this time the mosaic will print to about 50 inches wide by 45 inches tall.
