Description

M81 (Bodes Galaxy), M82 (Cigar Galaxy), Holmberg IX and IFN

12.2 hour HaLRGB

Interacting galaxies at 12 MLY whose last close encounter 100 MY ago turned M82 into a bright starburst galaxy birthing new stars at a great rate. Holmberg IX is an irregular dwarf satellite galaxy of M81. There is also plenty of Integral Flux Nebula (IFN) visible in the image which is in, and illuminated by, our own Milky Way. SN2014J is still visible in M82. North is to the right.

D.A.R.C. Observatory, Mercey Hot Springs , CA 2/22/14, 3/23/14

1/24/16 Brought out a bit more of the IFN, now that I'm more confident it is all IFN.
