Description

Sh2-157, the Lobster Claw Nebula, is an emission nebula in constellation Cassiopeia, close to Cepheus. It is located in the Perseus arm and approx 8000 LJ distant, spanning approx 800 LJ across.

The ring nebula around WR 157 (HIP 114791), a massive binary Wolf Rayet star, forms the northern part (north: to the right) of Lobster Claw. WR 157 lies within open star cluster Markarian 50 (just right of the image center), where several other WR stars are located. In the vicinity of Mar 50, the OIII emission is very bright.

The Lobster Claw Nebula also shows a very bright SII-emission region in the southern part of the constellation - Sh2-157a (aka LBN 537) - in the bright nucleus in the upper left center.

The compact open star cluster in the bottom - NGC7510 - is about 11000 LJ distant and about 10 million years young. It's sometimes called dormouse cluster.

At the very right in the top quarter, there is newborn star HH 170 (HIP 114995), a Herbig-Haro object appearing as a reddish star with some structure around it.
