Description

This pair of interesting magnitude 12 objects is located in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +45 degrees.   The galaxies are not disturbed and appear to be too far apart from each other  to be interacting.

NGC 1160, at top, is a spiral galaxy located 80 million light years away.  It spans 1.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 40,000 light years.  The galaxy is on the small side to show much structure, although a slight yellow bar and faint spiral structure are visible.

NGC 1161, at bottom, is a lenticular galaxy located 90 million light years away.  It spans 1.7 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 50,000 light years.  I love the dark dust band just inside of the inner ring.  These dust bands seems to be unique to lenticular galaxies. I have a collection of lenticular galaxies with dust band inner rings here.
