Description

The California Nebula is located in the constellation Perseus and is an emission nebula. However, there are also some dark nebulae surrounding this bright nebula. I was able to capture some of them in my image. This nebula has been catalogued as NGC 1499 or Sh2-220. This object can be observed from the northern hemisphere in fall and winter. The nebula is about 1,800 light years from our solar system. The Califonia Nebula is so named because it resembles the US state of California. NGC 1499 is probably illuminated by Xi Persei (also called Menkib), a hot, blue-white main sequence star of spectral type o7e, which can be seen on the upper side of my picture.
