Description

On 16 April 2022, a Type Ia supernova 2022hrs was discovered in NGC 4647, an intermediate spiral galaxy estimated to be around 63 million light-years away in the constellation of Virgo.

A Type Ia supernova is a type of supernova that occurs in binary systems in which one of the stars is a white dwarf. The other star can be anything from a giant star to an even smaller white dwarf. When a runaway thermonuclear explosion rips through a white dwarf star and blows the star to bits, it’s called a type 1a supernova. These explosions are incredibly violent and incredibly bright, sometimes outshining entire galaxies.
