Description

This is first formal light with my 2600 MC Pro. I wasn't going to publish this until I got a lot more data, but the truth is that an image like this is always a work in progress. I've been shooting this object every year since I took up astrophotography. Each attempt has been deeper and better than the last. But one only needs to look at some of the best images of this region on Astrobin to know that improvement is always possible.

For this image, it took two trips to my local dark sky site in freezing weather to get about 4.5 hours worth of data. It was worth it for me. The Horsehead was not in as optimal a location as my previous attempt, passing over a light dome, and the overall integration time is a bit less. But the IMX 571 sensor is a superlative performer and I was able to improve on my previous attempt. This is one the objects, the first image of which I took using a portable iOptron Startracker and a 5D Mark IV, got me hooked on astrophotography. It continues to call.

My next attempt on this will likely be in the Fall, with the same camera mounted on my Takahashi Epsilon 130D which should give me much improved detail and color.
