Description

Jupiter - the ever stormy gas giant of our solar system. Several discrete white spots on the right hand side are cyclonic storm systems the size of continents on earth, which can be tracked for years, and which sometimes connect and merge.

Jupiter has the same ingredients as stars - but it never quite grew big enough to gravitationally compress its hydrogen (which comprises 90% of the planet) enough to ignite nuclear reactions in its core. Nevertheless, deep within Jupiter hydrogen gas is compressed to form a sea of liquid hydrogen, the largest ‘sea’ of liquid on any planet in the solar system.
