      Description

One of my main goals when selecting objects, at least nebulae, is to find something that will intriguingly fill the field of view and provide an opportunity to explore.

The dust in this part of the sky really meets that objective! This is immediately proximate to the more spectacular and more often photographed NGC 1333. However, the numerous catalogued objects in this field hold their own, but require a lot more time to bring above the noise.

I have been trying to preserve the dynamic range of darkest nebulae, which is challenging because noise reduction and tools like unsharp mask conspire to flatten these. One of my processing strengths is using curves, and as much as I am becoming better with Pixinsight on all fronts, including curves, Photoshop Curves is really easier for me to use to extract nuances in the dust, and everything else for that matter.

I am really in disbelief that my image was selected for this. I was overwhelmed to just have received the short-list notification. Best £10 I've ever spent!

      Stars and Nebulae 2023

I also wanted to congratulate @Marcel Drechsler, @Xavier Strottner and @Yann Sainty for the selection of their image as overall winner. When I first saw their capture of the large OIII structure near Andromeda, it pretty much blew my mind and I knew it would be the image selected for this recognition. https://www.astrobin.com/1d8ivk/H/
