Description

This object is a pair of interacting galaxies located 80 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +3 degrees.

The edge-on yellowish spiral galaxy to the left is NGC 5775. Dust lanes are prominent throughout the galaxy. The galaxy spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 95,000 light years.

The face-on bluish low surface brightness barred spiral galaxy to the right is NGC 5774. This galaxy is a bit smaller at 70,000 light years. Many star clusters are seen throughout the galaxy.

A 1993 paper, “Arcs and Bridges in the Interacting Galaxies NGC 5775/5774” by Irwin, identifies a gas hydrogen bridge connecting these two galaxies. It is believed that these galaxies are in the early stage of a merger, since neither galaxy is distorted and no tidal streams are evident.

The galaxy at the bottom, IC 1070, is a dwarf companion of these two. Interestingly, this is the most distorted galaxy of the group. It has a fascinating structure, including an odd blue ring.
