Description

Arp 18 - NGC 4088 - in Ursa Major

Halton Arp categorized this galaxy as a "Spiral with detached segments".

His notes to this galaxy: End of one spiral arm partially disconnected.

The northeastern arm is the disconnected one.

In addition, the arm pointing to southwest shows a blue tip, likely a star forming region. This arm is probably a tidal tail.

The image shows at least three quasars, two of them nearly crossing the galaxy with their direction to each other. The light of the third quasar, visible north above southern companion galaxy NGC 4085 (around one major axis length of it, a little bit more than the distance of the tiny red star north of NGC 4085's center), in Arp 18's direction, was measured to shows a redshift of 3,43. The photons arriving now at us started around 12,5 Billion years before.
