Actually, is wasn't THE night but an unexpected large break in the meanwhile months-long cloud cover persuaded me to grab the StarAdventurer and go to the balcony for a quick'n simple star party in order to catch at least easy winter targets before they will make way for another season.

In analogy to typical Japanese travel group programs, "Europe in 3 Days", here is "Orion in 30 Minutes". Lens stopped at f2.8. Well, you know my excuses, thin clouds, air turbulences and aliens with spot lights, but motivated.

The image in the revision, the "Leo in 40 Minutes" is hardly spectacular in the field of a 135mm lens but is showcases how small galaxies are and that you need about 1 meter of focal length to frame them nicely.

Also the date of the photos, Jan 10th, is the birthday of my two dogs, this year the brothers' twelfth. Converted to human years they are older than me, but, holy cow (2021 is the year of the cow), they are running much faster.

In Japan, people tend to follow trends even the silliest ones. In the Year of the Cow everybody wants to eat beef which, on the other hand, is comprehensible considering that 2020 was the Year of the Rat.

Japan has declared highest emergency state (緊急事態宣言) for the currently worst Corona hotspots, however, TV reports that the number of people walking in popular streets this first weekend are much higher than expected. A young man was interviewed: "Are you aware of the state of emergency?", and he went, "yes, but I want to have fun". Quod erat demonstrandum.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
