Description

The Trifid is an extraordinary object being the amalgamation of an open cluster, emissions nebula (red) reflection nebula (blue) and a dark nebula. I made it the second target of the night following the slightly lower Lagoon. At around 10 to 15 degrees above the horizon, it's position was not ideal. Good imaging data is only made possible due to the park's altitude (2300 ft), lack of light pollution and clear air. This is the first time my equipment has captured dark nebula that looks obviously separate from it's background. Its telling that this was achieved with only 1 hour of data in the inky darkness of Cherry Springs when 13 hours from my observatory were unsuccessful in pulling out the same in the Iris.
