Description

NGC 1398 is a beautiful barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Fornax. Because of its southerly declination of -26 degrees, it was a challenging object to image, even from Texas, where I took the data in 2013. I would love to shoot another image of this one, but it's not happening from my current latitude of 42 N.

The RGB data were so bad for this object (due to low elevation) that I initially couldn't patch them up well enough to even use them. Also, stars were incredibly large and blobby due to the elevation. Improvements in processing techniques finally allowed me to re-construct this image 7 years later, with smaller stars and a little bit of color added.
