Description

I wanted to image Sh2-308 (Dolphin Nebula) so badly ever since I first saw it several years ago. It has such an amazing and unique 3D look - it just looks like it can’t be real. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I was never able to image this target before having lived further up north previously and not have a completely open southern horizon. This target only rises to a maximum of 35 degrees from where I am in Florida, making it very hard to get good data. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

On top of that Sh2-308 is incredibly faint - by far the dimmest object I have ever imaged. I had to bin my CCD camera to 2x2 and take 30 minute exposures to get any reasonable data. All of this pushed my imaging setup and I could not have done it before building my observatory. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

To do this target justice I captured over 64 hours of data. I also added in RGB stars. I had never done this before so that was a whole new learning process to do it right. Image details below! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
