Description

A deep image of comet C/2012 K1 on 2nd/3rd May 2014. Imaged from dusk to dawn on a rare clear night

The faint ion tail is visible running down to the lower right.

Notes: All images were unguided on the 10 Micron mount which was set up and polar aligned to 15 arc second error during dusk. This took only 30 minutes and 3 passes of the model builder procedure (twilight lasts > 2 hours so I had plenty of time).

A full tutorial for the processing method is presented here

Imaging processing was the Bernard Hubl method with my own custom modifications. DSS was used for stacking with the star isolation and comet isolation using aggressive sigma-kappa (1.15/10) average combines.

Version B: Star size reduction and colour enhancement

Version C: Significantly reduced the star trails remnants by using a vertical banding noise reduction procedure.
