Description

The paper,

'Quasars around the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 3516'

by

YAOQUAN CHU

JIANYAN WEI AND JINGYAO HU

XINGFEN ZHU

and

H. ARP

reported redshift measurements of five X-ray emitting blue stellar objects located less than 12' from the X-ray Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516. They found these quasars to be distributed along the minor axis of the galaxy and to show a very good correlation between their redshift and their angular distance from NGC 3516. The authors considered that all of the properties of the high-redshift X-ray objects in the NGC 3516 field confirmed the body of earlier results on quasars associated with active galaxies. They concluded that, because of the number of objects in this one group, the evidence has been greatly strengthened for quasars being ejected from nearby active galaxies and exhibiting intrinsic redshifts.

These views are very questionable these days but fascinating nonetheless. I enjoy exploring these avenues that amateur imaging makes possible with modern equipment.

I managed to find 2 of the quasars mentioned in the paper, they are very faint but they do all appear to lie on the minor axis of the galaxy.

Thanks for looking,

David.
