Description

This is the galaxy called Fornax A, designated NGC 1316. This is a lenticular galaxy--a hybrid of a spiral galaxy and an elliptical galaxy--in the constellation Fornax about 60 million light years away. This galaxy appears to have undergone a number of interactions with other galaxies, and appears to be in the midst of a gravitational interaction with the smaller galaxy, NGC 1317, on the left. There are quite a few other very distant galaxies in this image.
