Description

M106 is a tightly-wound spiral galaxy at 22-25 MLY distance tilted 25 degrees to our line-of-sight. The spiral arms end in young clusters of massive, hot blue stars and it has an interesting water maser (microwave laser) in action whose water vapers give the extensive purple color. It is an extremely active galaxy (also Seyfert) with a massive black hole and total mass/size comparable to M31. The (apparent) nearby galaxies are NGC4248 and PGC39615, the interacting pair NGC4231,2 and, in the upper left corner, NGC4217. PI image solver comes up with about 13 additional PGC galaxies in this picture.
