Description

The Puppis A supernova remnant is a messy cosmic calamity approximately 7,000 light years away. It overlaps the Vela Supernova Remnant, but is four times further away.

A reprocessed version of this image is posted separately on Astrobin. This version includes an insert of a composite x-ray/optical image (Chandra, ROSAT et al) of the region (intended for mouse-over IDC)

The Chandra/ROSAT image shows a so-called 'cosmic cannonball', a neutron star (RX J0822-4300) ejected at an incredible 3-5 million kph by the supernova explosion. The 'cosmic cannonball’ is within the field of view but not visible in my optical image.

Exposures: 24.5 hours. 9.5 hours Ha. 13.5 hours OIII. 1.5 hours RGB.

This image was processed in PixInsight using a bicolor palette (Red = Ha, Green = OIII, Blue = OIII x 1.1). Short-exposure RGB image data was blended with stars in the NB image. The final image was re-sampled by 120% for aesthetic reasons.
