Description

The Soccer Ball, Kronberger 61 or Kn 61 - a planetary nebula among clouds of dust in the constellation Cygnus.

The Soccer Ball (Kn 61) was discovered by amateur astronomer Mattias Kronberger in January 2011 while researching images taken at the Gemini Observatory. The glow of the nebula is mainly created by the emission of twice-ionized oxygen. The object is located at a distance of 13 thousand light years from the Sun and has a visible angular size of 1.5'. Under the bright star to the left of the nebula visible distant barred spiral galaxy.
