Description

The Merope Nebula is a diffuse reflection nebula illuminated by the 4th magnitude star Merope.  It is part of the surrounding Pleiades star cluster and it appears blue because of the fine carbon dust which surrounds the cluster.  It was thought that the cluster formed from the surrounding dust cloud but it is now thought just to be passing through the cloud.  Revision B shows IC 349 which is also known as Barnard's Merope Nebula at the 7 o'clock position beneath the the star Merope. It has been examined for the presence of a proto-star but none has been found and the knot is thought to be a part of the dust cloud that is now being disturbed  by the stars radiation pressure,  or stellar wind.
