Description

Most of the nebulosity, catalogued as IC 2177 or Sh2-296, designates the Seagull's wings. The Seagull's head, cataloged as NGC 2327, Sh2-292, or Gum 1, is the brightest portion of the nebula complex. It surrounds an 8th magnitude star, and also includes some bluish reflection nebulosity catalogued as vdB 93. NGC 2327 is ionized by the class B0 IV subgiant HD 53367, a young 20-solar-mass star with a 5-solar-mass companion in a highly elliptical orbit. A dark lane protrudes into NGC 2327 from the eastern side towards the star.Several open star clusters are also involved in this area of nebulosity, the most prominent being NGC 2335, located on the northern "wing" of the Seagull figure. Sh 2-297 at the southern tip of the wings (at right on this image) is also reflection nebula vdB 94 and is associated with the B1 star HD 53623. Imaged from my backyard.ASIAIR, ZWO AM5, ASKAR FRA300, ASI2600MC, band filter. Processed in Pixinsight and Photoshop CC Bortle 6/7.
