Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a near edge-on spiral galaxy located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -29 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11 galaxy whose outer extent spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a massive diameter of 200,000 light years.

I am surprised that this is not a NGC object.  This is one of the more interesting stand-alone IC galaxies that I have imaged.

I love it when the core of a near edge-on spiral galaxy just peaks over the central dust lane, like a sunrise.  I calculate that the actual angle from edge-on here is about 4 degrees, but that is just an approximate calculation because of the estimated thickness dimension.

It is fun for me to scan through all of the 70 different edge-on spiral galaxies I have captured to date, seen here.  While at first glance they seem similar, all are different in terms of the glow of the central core, the light dome extent, the dust lane profile, and the aspect ratio (thickness relative to diameter).
