Description

Lying approximately 1000 LY from earth in the neighboring Orion arm of the Milky Way, NGC 1499 is 100 LY long and 60 LY wide. It is a glowing emission nebula comprising mainly of Hydrogen, which is energised by the bright star Xi Persei or 'Menkib' a blue giant.

Captured using my 2/3 mono CCD chip camera attached to an old Pentax 150mm SLR zoom lens, this image represents just over 4 hours integration with 5m subs. Gathered in Meade Envisage, calibrated and stacked in ASTAP and processed with Startools 1.8 alpha, using a standard workflow.

I'm pleased with the amount of detail, although surprised at the amount of noise - much due to a 99.7% moon, which tends to gradients in my Optolong L-eNhance filter. I could have swapped this out for separate Ha and OIII NB filters but wanted to try a single longer integration.

B

Description: This version contains top 60% of frames based on quality, as determined automatically by ASTAP. There appears to be less noise, which allowed a bit more deconvolution in Startools

C

Description: Another version with reduced stretch using non-linear DDP. The image feels smoother, although noise is still prevalent.

D

Description: Following a really helpful suggestion by @Lee, I have blended two versions (a brighter linear stretch with smoother DDP stretch) in Startools to produce this composite, which I think is the best compromise between brightness and contrast.
